Another excellent round by Federal, this proven 9×19 Hydra-shok cartridge gives you a heavy weight bullet (147 grain), with good penetration and very strong energy on target for a cartridge (9mm) that caught a lot of flack some years back for underwhelming performance in this grain weight load.
With such a heavy bullet, to be able to deliver good velocity (and ultimately good penetration) as well as a legitimately upper end of the spectrum muzzle energy, this round is a premium load, capable of one shot stops with the 9mm.
Having been the brunt of a lot of jokes in the late nineties, the 147 grain projectile is actually quite a decent performing bullet, if it’s pushed fast enough to get the penetration and offers the hitting power you need to justify the loss of velocity when moving form a lower grain weight. This 147 grain projectile is pushed out at 1000 fps, with a muzzle energy of just over 325 ft. lbs. of energy. All of the sudden, the ballistics on this round are starting to make real world sense.
The proven Hydra-shok projectile is the icing on the cake with its high weight retention and superior mushrooming.
